Lid Hygiene with Contact Lens Wearers
Contact lenses increase cases of inflammation:
- Healthy tear film is important to contact lens wearers, especially when we know that 72% of contact lens wearers drop out is due to "discomfort". This discomfort is commonly associated with lack of performance of the outer tear layer, which is largely produced by the Meibomian glands situated in the eye lid margins.
- In
addition to chronic situations such as Blepheratis, even simple eyelid disorders (which block the performance of the Meibomian glands) and "environmental" sources (such as debris build up from dirt, make-up, skin flakes) have a direct impact on the functioning of the Meibomian glands.
Contact lenses increase cases of infection:
- The conjunctival bacterial infection increases in wearers of hydrophilic, hard, and silicon lenses.
- Infection with fungus may occur from contaminated cosmetics with hydrophilic contact lenses.
A daily lid hygiene regime for contact lens users should become a routine as brushing the teeth.
